Padraig Harrington named as Ryder Cup vice-captain

Padraig Harrington is one of three set to deputise as Ryder Cup vice-captain, Darren Clarke this afternoon announced.

Clarke unveiled Harrington as vice captain alongside Paul Lawrie and Thomas Bjorn for the 2016 edition of the biennial tournament against USA.

This year's event, which takes place in Minnesota from 30 September to 2 October, sees Team Europe defending their title and will feature the experienced trio at the helm.

"I was delighted when Thomas, Pádraig and Paul all accepted the invitation to become Ryder Cup Vice Captains. They needed no persuading," Clarke said.

"They'll give me the information that I may not want to hear as opposed to everything I do. They'er three guys I trust implicitly and they will tell me the truth. That's going to be every important.

"Thomas, Pádraig and Paul have all been friends of mine for a very long time, we've all had successful Ryder Cup experiences. They know what it's all about."

Bjorn - who's been a vice-captain on three previous occasions - is joined by Harrington who supported Paul McGinley at Gleneagles and Lawrie makes his debut in the role.

Clarke says he will name his two remaining vice-captains later in the summer during the Open in July.
