Oscar De La Hoya calls for boycott of McGregor-Mayweather "farce"

Oscar De La Hoya is a legend of boxing.

The 44-year-old is a former Olympic champion in the amateur ranks, and a multi-weight champion. As a promoter and head of Golden Boy Promotions, he remains one of the most influential men in the sport.

In an open letter to boxing fans, he has called on boxing fans to boycott a potential fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. The duo look set to fight before the end of the year.

"With each passing day, it looks more and more likely that the circus known as Floyd Mayweather Vs. Conor McGregor will be coming to town in the near future."

"As undercard fights start to take form, athletic commissions give their blessings in exchange for millions of dollars and the fighters start counting even more cash, one group will eventually be left to make sure this farce doesn’t occur."

"We, the fans, who are the lifeblood of our sport."

De La Hoya claimed that boxing "might not ever recover", from the potential fight despite calling McGregor "almost certainly the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter".

The California native compared his own golf game (of which he has a ten handicap) to McGregor's bout with Mayweather.

"I happen to be a pretty good golfer. Could I potentially hold my own on one of the second-tier tours? Maybe. But would I be able to compete with Rory McIlroy, Jordan Speith or Sergio Garcia? Of course not. Nor would I think to try."
