Olympics would be a dream come true - Michael O'Reilly

Three days ago, Laois native Michael O'Reilly stepped into the ring in Baku to take on a local favourite in the European Games Middleweight final and came away with gold.

Continuing this country's fine tradition in amateur boxing, he laid down a marker ahead of the run to next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Tonight on Off The Ball, the 22-year-old told us that next summer is on the forefront of his thoughts.

"Next for me will be the World Championships in October and if I do well there, it gives me a chance to qualify for the Olympic games in Rio. That's my aim and it would be the dream come true," he said.

His trainer Pat Ryan also joined us on the line and said that beating fellow Irish fighter Darren O'Neill in last year's National Finals.

"When you beat a big name boxer like Darren - and Darren is a special lad, he's part of the Laois-Kilkenny county board here and I've known Darren since he was a child - it was a big, big contest for Michael going into it. But Michael's preparation for that was superb," he said, who also discussed some of the struggles O'Neill endured before funding kicked in.
