O'Donovan brothers win a silver medal at the European Championships

Gary and Paul O'Donovan have claimed a silver medal at the European rowing championships, to add to Ireland's already impressive medal haul from earlier today.

The brothers, who were out to defend the gold medal they won last year, came home in a time of 6:20.06, with the French team finishing in first place. They were challenged by the Italians and Poles in the final stages of the race, but managed to steer home in second place, and round off a fantastic morning for team Ireland.

The Olympic silver medallists followed on from fellow Skibbereen clubmates Denise Walsh, along with the Mark O'Donovan and Shane O'Driscoll, who all came away with medal finishes in their respective races.

Denise Walsh rallied from fifth after 500m, to finish in second place in the lightweight women's single sculls. Mark O'Donovan and Shane O'Driscoll combined to win a gold medal in the men's lightweight pairs, crossing the finishing line in 6:32.34.
