Mixed day for Irish boxers bidding for Olympics qualification

Irish boxer David Oliver Joyce is now just two wins away from a place at Rio 2016 after winning his opening lightweight bout today at the European Olympic Qualifying tournament in Turkey.

Joyce defeated his Georgian opponent on all three cards to advance to the quarter-finals.

But there was also disappointment today for the Irish squad after top seed in the Middleweight division, Michael O'Reilly suffered a shock defeat.

O'Reilly, who reportedly picked up a shoulder injury during the opening round of his fight against his Finnish opponent Ilari Kijala, has one final chance to qualify for Rio at the world qualifying tournament in June.

Ireland team captain Darren O'Neill beat Gabriel Richards of Sweden in a first round stoppage in his fight which got underway at 7pm Irish time. He advances to the last-eight.
