McIlroy the best of the Irish ahead of round three at the PGA Championship

Stormy conditions may have halted round two of the year's final major yesterday the rain hasn't dampened the spirits of the Irish at Whistling Straits.

The travelling contingent were boosted by the return of world number one, Rory McIlroy, but they had a lot to do to put themselves in contention for the PGA Championship.

Here's how they stand.

Here is selection of the top 25 and a flavour of how things shape heading into the third round.

Some players were forced to retire before they finished their second round, but kicked-off again at 1pm Irish time to complete their round.

Jordan Spieth was one of the big movers yesterday, carding a five-under round of 67.

Now, here's how the Irish have fared. Bare in mind, the projected cut is +2 as it stands.

Those outside the Top 70 plus ties are cut from the field and do not advance to the final two rounds.

Rory McIlroy (-2, Tied 27th)

He's returned from what looked a pretty nasty ankle injury to feature in the championship where he won in superb fashion last year.

McIlroy is paired with Spieth as the pair continue to fight it out for the title of the world's best golfer. McIlroy enjoyed a solid start to the tournament, consistently hitting fairways and his ball striking is featuring predominantly as one of his biggest assets.

He'll need to make up ground on the top of the leaderboard, but traditionally it's round three where McIlroy tears up the field and powers on to leave him well in contention on the final day.

Shane Lowry (+3, Tied 77th)

So much was promised of the Clara man heading into the tournament after his success at the Bridgestone Invitational last week.

His final round heroics saw him come from behind to claim the title in dramatic fashion and is becoming a player who can perform under serious pressure.

After a poor opening round of six-over 78 he's turned things around with an excellent three-under 69 to leave him one shot adrift of the projected cut.

However, he looks like he'll be exiting the competition early.

Padraig Harrington (+3, Tied 77th)

He won the championship back in 2008 and has this season given his fans something to smile about once again.

After his unlikely victory in the Honda Classic as well as his performances in Irish Open and The Open Championship this summer, the 43-year-old is playing with a certain freedom that hasn't been seen in recent years.

He sits one adrift of the projected cut after rounds of 76 and 71 and depending on how the rest of the field finishes looks like he could be heading home.

Graeme McDowell (+5, Tied 100th)

He will certainly be heading home, after an opening round of 73 he still looked in good shape and made some excellent chipped shots to give himself a chance heading into the second round.

But yesterday's four-over 76 condemend him to exit the final major of the year.

Darren Clarke (+15, Tied 145th)

I don't think much more needs to be said here. Rounds of 78 and 81 left him well out of the competition and it's been a pretty forgettable tournament for Clarke.

At least he'll have the rest of the weekend off.
