Matt Lawton on Sagan: "He crossed the line there"

Mark Cavendish was forced to pull out of this year's Tour de France after injuring his shoulder during a sprint finish on Tuesday.

World Champion Peter Sagan was subsequently disqualified for his role in the crash despite pleading his innonce afterwards.

Matt Lawton joined Tuesday's Off the Ball and believes the World Champion crossed the line.

"We all know in a sprint like that, the sprinters, they do lean on each other," he told Joe Molloy. "It's pretty physical but there's got to come a point morally where you have to put the welfare of another rider before any ambition to win a sprint.

"He crossed the line there and it sounds like Cavendish is probably out of the race as well. He has gone for a scan tonight (Tuesday) which hasn't revealed a fracture but I think they suspect it's ligament damage."

"It's very similar to what happened to him in Harrowgate in 2014 and he's probably out of the race as well."

Reflecting on the Tour so far, he said: "It's been incredibly newsy so far. I still think Froome looks very strong...but it's been one story after another, day-after-day so far. We've had all the fuss around the team sky skin-suits, we've had crashes - it's been exciting."
