Martin Kaymer cites Paul McGinley's encouraging words after positive Irish Open start

Martin Kaymer has credited words of encouragement from Paul McGinley for helping him on his return to form.

The German had a positive start to the Irish Open and is among the highest placed on Day 1 after a 3-under par round around the K Club.

Kaymer was part of McGinley's 2014 Ryder Cup winning team and is hopeful McGinley's words "trigger" something.

"I was playing well, I just didn't see the results and actually Paul McGinley came up to me two days ago and said 'Martin, this is usually your time. Two years go when you played for my team, you won the Players [Championship] and the US Open and usually that's your summer' and I can only hope it triggers something now," the two-time major winner told Off The Ball's Nathan Murphy after his opening round.

"It takes a lot of patience but I think it's a little bit easier when you have a little bit more experience in that sport, that you know you go through times when the golf is not really the problem [but] it's the results that don't show. And then you have some technical problems and maybe it's one of those - and maybe I speak for Rory [McIlroy] as well - that he doesn't see the good results but it's just a matter of patience and then a guy like him can win many tournaments in a row."
