Leona Maguire named as America's Player of the Year

Cavan golfer Leona Maguire has been named as the best best collegiate golfer in America by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.

The Rio 2016 Olympian is currently ranked number one in the World Rankings for women's amateur golfers. She is on course to end the year at the top of the rankings for the third time in a row.

It's the second time Maguire has won the WGCA Player of the Year title in the past three years and adds to her excellent run of form since moving to Duke University in North Carolina.

The 22-year-old has played in ten tournaments this season in college golf and never finished lower than in a tie for sixth place. The season also included three tournament wins and five other top-three finishes.

In her third year at Duke, Maguire intends to graduate next year before moving on to the LGPA Tour. Last year she decided to pull out of attempting to qualify through Q-School before remaining in college to graduate.

Along with twin sister Lisa, the Maguires are part of the Duke team that finished in 18th at the recent NCAA Championships. For the second time, Leona finished in second place in the individual tournament.

Speaking to the Golf Channel after winning the award, Leona Maguire revealed that in was "an incredible feeling" to win the award for the second time.

She added that there was "tremendous value" to the award, with it being voted for by the coaches in collegiate golf.
