Leona Maguire misses out on first LPGA win by just two shots

Leona Maguire missed out on winning the LPGA's Meijer Classic by just two shots on Sunday as she bid to become the first-ever Irish player to win on the tour.

The Cavan native shot a really impressive 6-under-par final round of 66 to see her finish second on the leaderboard in Michigan.

23-under-par was her final all-round score, just two shots behind winner Nelly Korda of the United States, who is currently the fourth highest-ranked player in the world

Maguire actually performed better than Korda in three rounds with 65, 64, and 66 on Thursday, Friday and Sunday respectively.

It was her third round on Saturday though that let her down, a bogey on seventh saw her shoot a 2-under-par round of 70.

Korda, who was going for her second win this calendar year, shone here with a career-best 10-under-par round of 62.

Although 26-year-old Maguire may be disappointed not to get the win this weekend after being so close you really get the sense her first victory on the LPGA Tour is just around the corner.

This is her second second-place finish this season and she could not be in better form heading into next weekend's major - the Women's PGA Championship.
