Kiawah Island to welcome 10,000 a day for PGA Championship

A limited number of fans will return for May's PGA Championship.

The PGA of America have confirmed that Kiawah Island will host 10,000 fans per day for the second Major of the year.

Last year's PGA Championship was delayed until August, and played out at TPC Harding Park behind closed doors.

Fans have begun trickling back to American courses in recent weeks, with 5,000 fans a day permitted into the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The PGA of America's decision was made in collaboration with the state of South Carolina, MUSC Health and the Centers (sic) for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We're excited to welcome spectators back to the PGA Championship this May in a way that is responsible and aligned with current South Carolina health protocols," said PGA of America president Jim Richerson.

"While we wish we could accommodate the sellout crowds who had purchased tickets, the 2021 PGA Championship will be steeped in gratitude as the best players in the world compete on the historic Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort."

Kiawah was the venue of Rory McIlroy's second ever Major win, when he claimed the 2012 PGA Championship by eight strokes.

It's hoped that The Masters will also entertain a limited number of patrons in April.

"As with the November Masters, we will implement practices and policies that will protect the health and safety of everyone in attendance," Augusta National Golf Club Fred Ridley said in January.

"Nothing is, or will be, more important than the well-being of all involved.

"While we are disappointed that we will be unable to accommodate a full complement of patrons this year, we will continue our efforts to ensure that all who purchased tickets from Augusta National will have access in 2022, provided conditions improve."
