Kenny Egan: For Mayweather, "this is handy money"

Former Irish Olympian Kenny Egan has given Conor McGregor a slim chance of putting a blemish on Floyd Mayweather's unbeaten professional record.

However, the Olympic silver medalist believes the American's boxing experience will be the deciding the factor when the pair meet in August.

Speaking on Thursday's Off the Ball, Egan said: "This is a big one for him. This is the biggest of his career but look, it's exactly what it says on the tin. He has talked himself into this position. Listen, fair play to him. I wouldn't begrudge him a few bob and that's being honest with you.

"This is a nice few bob for Conor McGregor. Does he deserve to be in a ring with Mayweather? Probably not but look, this is show business and this is what people are going to pay their $100 in America for or people over here €30 for or whatever it's going to be. They want to see this because it's different."

Looking ahead to the bout itself, he said: "For Conor McGregor to get in there and attempt to try and beat Floyd Mayweather at Mayweather's game, I think it's a big ask. Can he do it? I don't think he can.

"But, at the end of the day, when the two of them are finished, whatever way the result is going to be, they'll shake each other's hands, give a little wink and say 'nice one, that was a nice little earner'.

"Conor can go back to MMA and resume his career as an MMA fighter, which he's very, very good at it...but as a boxer, I've watched the clips of him sparring and his chin is sky-high, his feet are very poor. He has a great left hand, don't get me wrong but Mayweather is going to see that from a mile away."

"He's a fresh 40-year-old and for him, this is going to be handy money. This really is handy money. The both of them are going to make a nice earner out of it and it's a win-win for the two of them. But, it's so different, everybody on the planet is going to tune in and watch it," he added.
