Jordan Spieth wins back to back majors

Jordan Spieth has followed up his Masters victory in April to win his second major at the US Open.

The 21 year old becomes the youngest since Gene Sarazen in 1920 to win two majors. He is also the youngest winner of the US Open in 92 years.

He won the tournament on -5, finishing one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson and former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen. Spieth, playing in yesterdays penultimate group birdied the final hole to set the clubhouse target for Johnson who was in the final group.

Johnson was on -4 and reached the green in two giving him, two shots to force a play off with Spieth. He somehow three putted the final hole to hand the Texan victory. Johnson has now played in the final group of a major on four occasions and has yet to win a major. It's his second top six finish in a major this year.

Spieth started the day in a four way tie for the lead with Johnson, Jason Day and Brandon Grace, but bogeyed his first hole to drop off the top of the leaderboard. Three birdies on the back nine including one on the final hole ensured victory by a shot.

It was a frustrating day for both Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy. Lowry started the day, three behind the leaders but a one over par round saw him finish level par in a tie for ninth. That is Lowry's best ever finish in a major.

McIlroy flirted with the top of the leaderboard at one point, reaching -2 after 13 holes, but bogeyed two of his last five holes to join Lowry on level par.
