Billy Walsh's resignation as head coach of the IABA's High Performance Unit yesterday is still causing waves throughout the Irsh sporting world.
Irish Sports Council CEO John Treacy was part of the negations to keep Walsh in his position and spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning about the situation.
"This has been going on since last February", Treacy told Newstalk Breakfast. "We intervened many many times during this. We must have had 20 interventions with the IABA. We had had eight or nine meetings.
In August an agreement was made with Billy Walsh and the IABA which was never taken to the board. Treacy said "we dont know why". Walsh gave up his employment with the IABA to become a contractor after another meeting, but the situation came to a head and had "fallen down on the non financial aspects". Treacy called the situation "ridiculous".
Treacy told Newstalk Breakfast that Walsh showed "tremendous flexibility around the financial aspects" of a potential deal.
The Wexford native is now expected to travel to America later this week, to take up a position as the head of US Boxing's Female Programme.
