Is it curtains for Jenson Button?

Speculation has been mounting over the future of Jenson Button and his position in the seat of McLaren.

Button, who was forced to retire from last week's Singapore Grand Prix, has left the media and the rest of the racing world waiting on whether or not he will step away from the circuit after this weekend.

“The joy you get is in competing. It’s about fighting at the front" he said in the lead up to this week's Grand Prix.

"It’s about the possibility of standing on top of the podium. That’s the joy of Formula One,” the 35-year-old said before adding: “I don’t think any driver has joy when he is not fighting for victories. I don’t like finishing 14th or 10th. That is not what excites me.”

You would have to cast your mind back as far as 2012 for Button's last victory in Brazil.

McClaren's chief operating officer Jonathon Neale said; "Jenson is a fantastic guy, a world champion and a big part of our family at Honda and McLaren for six seasons.

“I really hope that we have done enough between us to continue those discussions with him, and have the confidence to keep him with us and that is what we would like.”

Despite being enthusiastic about the future of the sport - “There’s a lot to look forward to in terms of Formula One’s future. In 2017, we have new regulations, and before that, there will be three or four teams fighting at the front. It will be the best season since 2013, or 2012, I guess" - it's unclear whether he'll still be in the drivers seat come Monday morning.
