Irish amateur Dunne leads at St Andrews

Irish amateur Paul Dunne, a 22-year-old from Greystones, is the joint-leader of the Open at St Andrews after a magnificent third round display.

Pádraig Harrington, a two-time Open winner, also took full advantage of  good scoring conditions on the Old Course to propel themselves firmly into contention with Dunne propelling himself to the top of the leaderboard.

Dunne currently sits on twelve-under par, alongside South African Louis Ooosthuizen and Australian Jason Day with Jordan Spieth one shot further back. Harrington is in fifth place on ten-under par.

Dunne carded back-to-back 69s in Round 1 and 2 on Thursday and Friday and started his today with a birdie on the first to move within three of overnight leader Dustin Johnson.

Dunne then birdied four, seven and nine to move to ten-under par while a further birdie at ten saw him take the outright lead.

There was a further birdie at fifteen and parred the final three holes to finish on -6 for the day and an impressive round of 66. This leaves the Greystones native in a strong position going into the final day to be the first amateur to winThe Open since Bobby Jones in 1930

Dunne wasn’t the stand-out performer of the day as Marc Leishman shot the round of the championship as he carded a 64 to catapult himself into contention and leaves him three off the lead in a chasing pack of 9.

The 34-year-old came within one shot of a record tying score of 63 at a major championship, This was a massive turn around as he only just made the cut by one shot and started his third round nine shots off the pace.
