Injury forces Ciara Mageean withdrawal during final

Ireland's Ciara Mageean was unable to complete her 1,500 metres final at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

The Co Down native had qualified for the final after finishing the semi final heats among the fastest losers.

But an Achilles injury during the final race on Saturday evening meant she had to withdraw.

Speaking after the race, she said that she felt a "throbbing" pain in her right foot and added that it had left her "worried".

Great Britain's Laura Muir went on to win the race in a championship record time of 4:02:39, ahead of Konstanze Klosterhalfen of Germany and Sofia Ennaoui of Poland.

Fellow Irish athlete John Travers was 11th in the Men's 1,500 final in a time of 3:53.11.

Earlier for the Irish, Phil Healy and Ciara Neville both progressed to the semi-finals of the 60 metres.

Both sprinters finished fourth in this morning’s heats and will run again tomorrow at 3pm.
