"I would take Rory any time over Spieth"

With Rory McIlroy returning from injury in time for the PGA Championship, many expect the final major of the year to be a battle between the World No 1 and his biggest rival Jordan Spieth.

But while Spieth has proven himself to be a major contender (and two time champion this year, lest we forget), former Guardian golf correspondent Lawrence Donegan still feels McIlroy is the superior player. 

He told Off The Ball: "It's not 50:50. McIlroy's a much better player. Spieth putts like God. He hits a lot of solid shots, he's obviously No 2 and he's won two majors, but he's not anywhere near the ball striker McIlroy is - and McIlroy's short game is getting better all the time. I would take Rory any time over Spieth."

Donegan is also confident that McIlroy will win more majors than his competitor over the course of their careers, and also previewed WGC Bridgestone Invitational champion Shane Lowry's chances at the PGA Championship:
