"I changed my personality to survive out on tour"| Pádraig Harrington

Pádraig Harrington talked to Golf Weekly about how he has changed his attitude in recent years on tour.

"I changed my personality to survive out on tour," the three time major winner said.

Harrington acknowledged that he's now often fighting just to make the cut.

"I want to win but it's tougher. Even in the first round, I might have an eight foot putt and if I miss it I’m thinking that I’m on the cut line. I'm going to miss the cut.

"Whereas when you’re in a comfort zone, you’re not thinking like that because you know you’re making the cut.

"You know if you can just hang in there then you’re going to be in the top-10 at the end of the week and in contention.

"Now its very tight for making cuts, I don’t have that wiggle room."

Having realised this, Harrington said that he tries to enjoy life on tour more.

"I would've made much more of an effort to go out and socialise and be out there with the lads.

"I realised it was tougher on the golf course but it was actually great fun off the golf course.

"That was bringing the enjoyment back into the lifestyle and the game which extends a career."

Harrington talked about how a lot of players get burned out on tour and to avoid it happening to him, he tried to be more appreciative of his lifestyle.

"I love being out there with all that goes on, the fun, being out with lads.

"I have a lifestyle out on tour that nobody would turn down. I can pick and choose when I play golf tournaments, go all around the world to the best golf courses.

"Why would I give up playing?

"Three or four years ago I did some commentary and I liked it. I like doing the coaching as well but then I sit back and say I actually like playing.

"It mightn’t go as well as I want but I do believe it can."
