He's got a 'big future' but Ireland's Paul Dunne also has a big decision to make

Ultimately, it ended in disappointment as Irish amateur golfer Paul Dunne slipped from the pedestal of an unexpected lead at The Open in the final round.

But as BBC sportswriter and broadcaster Tom English told Off The Ball's Joe Molloy at St Andrews tonight, the Co Wicklow native has a promising future - although there is one dilemma for him to decide on.

"It's sad for him that he's had a poor day today. It was always likely to happen. The atmosphere at the first was huge, he'd become suddenly a name that everybody wanted his autograph, everybody was talking about him. I think he's a very level-headed young man. But no matter how level-headed you are, that kind of thing must get to you," he said.

"It's a shame that he hasn't won leading amateur but those other amateurs that passed him today weren't sleeping on the overnight lead. It's a different dynamic. It's a draining thing. He was in the media centre last night and the other amateurs weren't. All of the newspapers today were full of his story and the other amateurs didn't have that kind of intensity. I think he's been brilliant. For three rounds, he's been absolutely fantastic. He's got a big future but the big decision he's got to make now is whether he turns pro immediately or plays the Walker Cup."
