Despite posting four birdies, the Northern Irishman was disappointed with his score and felt he left some strokes out on the course.
Speaking about his round afterwards, the four time major winner said: "If we were able to flip-flop these tournaments and this would have been the first week and the US Open the second - I probably would have been a bit more comfortable.
"It's nice out there. It's a really great golf course. You can give yourself plenty of chances. Jeez, I only made four birdies today but it felt like I could have made eight or nine."
