Freddie Roach: GSP wants Conor McGregor for his final fight

Renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach has said that George St. Pierre wants a super fight with Conor McGregor as his final bout in MMA.

The former UFC welterweight champion who defended his title 10 times stepped away from the sport in November 2013 after a close, disputed win over Johnny Hendricks. The Canadian also cited shortcomings in the promotions drug testing policy as a reason for his self-enforced absence.

The UFC have since partnered with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) as their independent monitoring agency which has seen some high profile fights cancelled including the main event between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones at UFC 200.

After prolonged negotiations GSP agreed a three fight contract with the UFC which will see him face middleweight champion Michael Bisping later this year. The Canadian will attempt to become only the fourth person to hold two titles in the organisation after Randy Couture, BJ Penn and Conor McGregor.

Speaking to FightHubTV, GSP's striking coach Freddie Roach said the Canadian is hoping to sign off on his legendary career with a mega-money bout against Conor McGregor saying: "For the last fight, we're hoping for McGregor. Will McGregor really fight Mayweather? I don't think so.

"Who wouldn't want that fight? It's a big fight. I mean we'd have to maybe cut weight and meet in the middle somewhere but there's a lot of negotiations still to happen of course but who wouldn't want that fight?"

No date has yet been set for GSP's fight against Bisping although there has been speculation that it will be the headline fight for the UFC's international fight week in July.
