Despite having his own tribute song, Jarryd Hayne has been cut from the San Francisco 49ers squad

The Hayne Plane had an impressive few games in the preseason, but has struggled to make an impact since the real games have started.

In reality, the plane never quite got off the ground, but he raised some eyebrows and got plenty of interest thanks to the fact that he was coming over as a complete rookie in the sport, and was leaving a well paid job with his NRL side the Parramatta Eels to tough it out and see if he could make the cut in the NFL.

As a long time fan of the sport, it was seen as a brave decision by many, and he made a number of big runs and impressive plays in the preseason that ensured that he would make it to the final roster for the regular season matches.

However, his debut in real competitive football was less illustrious as he fumbled on his frist chance to field a return. He did improve in the wake of that, but has been struggling to break through and make it on to the team as a running back and earn a spot on the roster proper, outside of special teams action.

On Saturday, it was revealed that Hayne had been edged out of the squad entirely and placed on the waiver wire in favour of freeing up a roster spot for running back Kendall Goskins.

Hayne, now a free agent, is said to be "shocked and upset" as a result, but he tweeted that he hopes to be back in the squad soon with the 49ers, who can also put him back on their roster early next week.
