Could LeBron really be deprived of the MVP award despite being the outstanding candidate?

Despite LeBron James' best efforts, the Cleveland Cavaliers are within one game of losing this season's NBA finals.

James has averaged 36.6 points but with the Finals series at 3-2 in the Golden State Warriors' favour ahead of Game 6 tonight, it could all be over for the Cavs.

Slam! Magazine editor at large Ryan Jones joined us on Off The Ball and suggested that winning the finals Most Valuable Player award is not a foregone conclusion for James, because of the way it is decided.

"There's certainly a segment of the media and fans who would say you can't be the finals MVP if your team loses. I would err on the side of, if you were playing so much better than everybody else on the floor no matter what side you're on and you're clearly carrying a much, much less talented and deep supporting cast, you should probably get fair consideration for it," said Jones, adding that tonight's Game 6 could be decisive in terms of individual awards for James.

But history does not seem to favour the Cavs forward as only one player (Jerry West in 1969) has ever won the Finals MVP award while simultaneously being on the losing side.
