Chris Froome has been fined for being a hero to us all when he elbowed a fan who thought it a good idea to run beside the peloton.
The British cyclist went on to claim the yellow jersey but the stage will likely be remembered for Froome's accuracy with his elbow.
Froome was fined 200 Swiss francs (€185) by the race jury for “inappropriate behaviour”.
“I have absolutely nothing against the Colombian fans, I think they’re fantastic,” Froome explained after the race.
“They bring great spirit to it. But this guy in particular was running right next to my handlebars. He had a flag that was flying out behind him and it was just getting dangerous so I pushed him away. I lashed out and pushed him away.”
The fan, quite clearly, didn't see it coming and was left reeling from the blow and Froome explained further on twitter why he felt compelled to elbow the man.
Getting abuse for the hand off of the spectator, camera doesn't show his flag almost going into my front wheel & across my handlebars! 😡
