Brooks Koepka reveals phonecall with Dustin Johnson contributed to US Open victory

Brooks Koepka says Dustin Johnson contributed to his US Open victory on Sunday night after sharing a phonecall with the 2016 champion before his final round.

The American won his first major championship and picked up only his second ever victory on the PGA Tour last night. Speaking to reporters after his round, he revealed that compatriot Johnson contacted him to share his experience of going into the final round.

Johnson famously won the US Open, despite the threat of a stroke penalty hanging over him during his final round.

"Dustin actually called me [Saturday] night and told me to just stay patient," he said. "Just keep doing what you're doing, you're going to win the thing, and just don't get ahead of yourself. A bunch of people told me that.

"I mean there's probably not that much that's that interesting to be honest. It was a long phone call. For us it was like two minutes it wasn't much.

"But he just said a few things, and just stay patient. And I'll win if I stay patient and just keep doing what I'm doing.

"Because we played Tuesday practice round together and, I mean, he watched me play. I thought I played pretty solid on Tuesday. And he said he was pulling for me and just hang in there."

Koepka pulled away during the final round after securing the outright lead and said his play over the final nine holes were similar to how he performed at Erin Hills.

"I felt like I really stayed patient all week. Between conversations I've had with Claude [Harmon III, coach] and Pete Cowan [swing coach] sat me down on Tuesday, and kind of had a conversation with me just kind of staying patient.

"I felt like that has been the thing lately with me, why I haven't really played that well. I've been trying to win so badly. I felt like I've underachieved. The more patient that I can become, the more times I'll put myself in this situation."
