US Open Preview: 'McIlroy has a huge advantage this week'

The 115th US Open gets underway tomorrow at Chambers Bay, Washington State as the world's elite golfers vie for the second major of the year.

Andy North won the tournament twice during his career, and after reminiscing about his 1985 victory on Off The Ball tonight, he also looked ahead to the coming action over the next four days with Ger and Joe.

"I really do love Rory's chances," he said of World No 1 McIlroy, whose recent form has been patchy.

"Watching him hit balls this week, it looks like he's got a lot of confidence. Every player goes through stretches where it just doesn't work. But he looks really good and I think he has a huge advantage this week. There's so many holes where, if you can carry the ball 300 yards in the air, you can cut across bunkers and carve of 30, 40, 50 and maybe even 75 yards from where the other guys that can't carry it hit it."

As for Tiger Woods who is struggling and languishing in a lowly world ranking, North thinks the 14-time Major winner can make the cut, saying: "He's pretty darn strong mentally. Maybe he can get in contention and have some fun."

North also spoke about the unpredictable nature of the course at Chambers Bay.

"They gave this golf course the US Open three months after it was built. To me, that makes no sense at all," he said.
