Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic to claim first Rome Masters title

Andy Murray has defeated his greatest rival by beating Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-3 to claim the Rome Masters on his 29th birthday.

Murray, who was coming off a gruelling loss to Djokovic at the Madrid Open just a week ago, had never won the Rome Masters title and it was his first time to beat the Serbian on clay.

He had slipped to third in the world rankings behind Djokovic and Roger Federer but will return to the spot behind Djokovic ahead of the French Open at Roland Garros in a week's time.

Djokovic looked a little out of sorts during the game due to the lack of a rain delay. He complained about his ankle and looked upset throughout. He was, however, gracious in defeat and congratulated Murray during the winner's ceremony. He said, "Well done Andy...you were just too good."

Murray had lost 12 of the pair’s last 13 contests.

Murray finished the game in style as he answered Djokovic's serve-and-volley with an excellent scrambling point to seal his first ever Rome Masters title.
