Leeds United and Ireland legend John Giles believes that bringing in an interim manager at Manchester United will create more problems than it solves.
German tactical pioneer Ralf Rangnick has reportedly agreed a deal to take charge at Old Trafford until the end of the season.
Rangnick takes over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked after a 4-1 humiliation at Watford last Saturday.
It has been suggested that Mauricio Pochettino is the favoured candidate to take over permanently at the end of the season.
However, Giles warns that an interim manager might not fare any better than Solskjaer in terms of asserting control of the United player.
Giles joined Nathan Murphy on Thursday's Off The Ball. He explained the difficulties that any interim manager would face at Old Trafford.
"They've got a terrific squad of players, but they have to be controlled. You have to have a manager in charge of the situation."
"I know from being in the dressing room myself. If you have an interim manager coming in, you have to believe: 'This guy is in charge. I have to deal with him for my contract. He's going to be here forever, so we'll get on with the job.'"
"But, if you know this guy is gonna come in, and no matter what you do to impress him, he's gonna be gone in a few months, it doesn't work."
"You have to believe the manager is there forever and play for him. It's like when Klopp came into Liverpool, you've got to have a sense of: 'I gotta play for this guy - and I'm a bit scared of him!'"
Giles: "What's gone is gone - you don't get another Ferguson"
Giles also outlined why he believes United are not looking for the right traits when selecting the perfect candidate for manager.
"If you go back to Alex Ferguson, the players were terrified of him," Giles said. "He was brilliant because he said: 'This is what I want you to do; make no mistake about it. I'm the manager here - get out and play!'''
"But Ferguson wasn't copying anybody. When they put Solskjaer in, they said: 'We're going back to the Ferguson days; this is what it was like 20 years ago'; that was always complete nonsense."
"What's gone is gone - you don't get another Ferguson. Shankly was Shankly, Don Revie was Don Revie, Matt Busby was Matt Busby."
"You can't copy them. You can learn from them, and they can influence in what they do and how they do it. But it's you - it's your personality and your knowledge of football that gives you the respect of a group of players."
