"I would be amazed" | Giles picks his player of the year over favourite Henderson

Jordan Henderson would not be a deserving PFA Player of the Year, according to Republic of Ireland and Leeds legend John Giles.

While there are still 13 games to play in the Premier League, Liverpool captain Henderson is the current bookies favourite to receive the award as Liverpool sit atop the table by 22 points.

Despite Henderson's low price for the award, Giles - speaking as always on Thursday's Off The Ball - made the argument that many of Henderson's own teammates should be more likely to win the gong.

"The brilliant players that they have around him have made him a better player. I don't think he has made them better players," Giles said of the England international.

"It's probably a bit harsh because he is doing well in a very, very good team. His all-round play is okay. He doesn't score many goals, he doesn't make many goals. I think he's okay. I think his attitude is good. He's a good hard worker but I would be amazed [if he won the award].

Namechecking Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Andy Robertson, Giles added: "Most of the players contribute more than he does to the team - definitely. I'd be amazed if he was Footballer of the Year."

Asked who he feels is a deserving winner of the award for the season so far, Giles offered up the case for Scottish international Robertson even over fellow wing-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"I think he does everything. Alexander Arnold is excellent going forward, he distributes the ball brilliantly he's very, very good he makes a lot of goals but I don't think he's as good defensively.

"Robertson does that as well, he may not be quite as stylish but he defends much better. He's an all-round player he gets forward at the right time, he gets back defensively.

"There's a lot of outstanding players though, Van Dijk will be up there, Salah will be up there, Firminho, Mane - I would put all of them before Henderson."
