Gerrard: 'This moment is all about the supporters, they've been through a lot over the last couple of years'

Steven Gerrard was quick to praise the supporter at Ibrox as Rangers beat Celtic in a league game for the first time in 12 years this afternoon.

The home side ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Ryan Jack's first-half goal, and the former Liverpool captain said it was nothing short of what the fans deserved.

"This moment is all about the supporters, they've been through a lot," he told Sky Sports. "Certainly over the last couple of years they've been punished in these fixtures, so today is all about the supporters."

Rangers are now first in the table alongside their fierce rivals and Gerrard believes they were the superior side on the day.

We could have won it more comfortably, the keeper made a few outstanding saves and we hit the woodwork. We were superb today.

Ryan Jack scored the only goal of the game as Rangers beat Celtic in the Old Firm.

"The players were outstanding all over the pitch. I asked them could we win more 1v1s all over the pitch and we won them all.

"We were better to a man. We were the better team. We could have won it more comfortably, the keeper made a few outstanding saves and we hit the woodwork. We were superb today.

"We played with courage and belief. We were brave, we competed all over the pitch. I asked them to bring the A-Game but they brought the A+.

"That's what I want to see on a regular basis. There's still a lot of work to do, but Celtic are a good team and have a good manager. The first half of the season has gone really well.

"We can still improve and still grow and we will. But today is about the supporters. They need to enjoy the night and the next couple of weeks. They haven't had the bragging rights in this city in a long time."
