Ger Cunningham on the positives for Dublin hurlers as Leinster round-robin comes in

Former Dublin hurling manager Ger Cunningham feels the addition of a round robin format to the Leinster and Munster hurling championships will be a good thing for the Dublin hurlers.

Speaking at the Bord Gais Energy U21 Team of the Year, the Cork man spoke of the positives, with teams having two home and two away games.

"From a Dublin point of view, I suppose having two home games next year in Parnell Park, it will be fantastic for the promotion of the game," he said.

"In a city dominated by football it's great to have the opportunity that maybe Kilkenny or Galway as All Ireland champions could be coming to Parnell Park next year.

"So I think it's fantastic. The more games the better with a serious opportunity to get the quarter finals of the championship and possibly even further."

He added that he doesn't think any of Dublin's Leinster rivals will "be looking forward to going to Parnell Park next year".

Joe Canning was also part of the panel at the BGEU21 Team of the Year and the Galway star spoke about the long process of going from winning U21 All Irelands to finally doing so at senior this summer for the first time:

"The one thing I suppose is that it's about making that step up. Of the couple of teams that I was on at U21 level, I think there's like four of us still involved at senior level - and I played U21 for four years," he said.

"So that's one a year that's still playing. So you have to make the step up and grasp that as well."
