Gary Neville doesn't support games being played behind closed doors

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville says he's opposed to football games taking place behind closed doors and he'd prefer for Premier League matches to be postponed rather than played out without fans.

His old club's match away to LASK is likely to take place in an empty stadium in Austria while all games in Spain's La Liga will take place behind closed doors for at least the next two weeks to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

That decision has been made after the league sought advice from health authorities in the country. Ticket sales have been suspended for Northern Ireland's upcoming Euro 2020 play-off game against Bosnia in Sarajevo.

"I do NOT support matches played behind closed doors," ex England coach and now Sky Sports analyst Neville wrote on Twitter.

"If it’s necessary to shut down stadiums the associations must find a way of delaying the season and playing the games when it is safe to do so to protect the revenues for clubs that require this income to survive.

He feels the lack of income would have a detrimental effect on clubs:

"For league clubs that can’t afford this disruption, money is everything! This keeps people safe and protects the Revenue the clubs need. Playing behind closed doors is not an option IMO Some clubs would require short term loans that could be repaid when the games do get played."
