WATCH: DCU breeze past Queens University in Sigerson Cup

DCU have got off to a winning start in the 2017 Sigerson Cup.

The beaten finalists from 2016 were up against Queen's University Belfast at The Dub and ran out comfortable 3-10 to 0-3 winners in the Round 1 match.

Ryan Burns of Louth, Sligo footballer Niall Murphy and Roscommon's Enda Smith got the three goals for the Dublin university.

Meanwhile, NUI Galway will face St. Mary's in the next round of the third level competition after beating Trinity 4-12 to 1-7 this afternoon.

In the first round proper, UL needed extra time to beat Maynooth University 3-19 to 4-15.

DCU have won the Sigerson three times in the last eight years but were beaten by UCD in last year's tournament.

Their first goal against Queens came by way of Burns with the effort ultimately being deemed a goal despite the efforts of the Queens defender on the goal-line.

A second goal came by way of Duncan as DCU stretched their advantage.

And Smith finished off a sweeping move to score the third of DCU's goals on the day.

Thursday's Sigerson Cup fixtures see Garda College take on Cork Institute of Technology at Templemore with a throw in time of 2pm.

At the same time at Tuam Stadium, GMIT take on IT Sligo.
