Major blow to Tyrone as McShane looks set for Australia move

The Tyrone Senior Football panel look set to receive a major blow as Cathal McShane is reportedly poised to sign a two-year deal with Aussie Rules side Brisbane lions.

The 23-year-old, who was prolific at corner-forward for the Red Hand last year, played down suggestions of the move last week but apparently the deal is now all but done.

The Owen Roes clubman scored a very impressive 3-49 last summer as Tyrone made it to the All-Ireland semi-final, which they lost to Kerry.

McShane was easily Tyrone's best player that day and indeed for the whole summer, sending seven points over against the Kingdom - four of them from play.

Although he really came to prominence this year, McShane has been on the scene for a number of years.

He enjoyed a great run with the Red Hand's minors in 2013 when they reached the All-Irland final.

McShane then played midfield for the northern side when they beat Tipperary in the 2015 U-21 All Ireland final.

Mickey Harte has already received bad news this winter with Mattie Donnelly ruled out for their National League campaign after picking up a serious hamstring injury while playing for his club.

As well as this, forward Connor McAliskey announced in November that he has decided to take a break from inter-county football for the coming season.

The move means that he will be the second player from that Tyrone minor side of 2013 to play in Australia after Conor McKenna moved to Essendon in 2015.

Dublin and Ballyboden St Enda’s player James Madden is already on the books with the Lions.

McShane is not the first player this winter to step away from playing at home.

Tipperary's Liam McGrath and Liam Casey both revealed late last year that they intend to go travelling this summer.

That came as another blow to the Premier's new football manager David Power after 2016 All-Star forward Michael Quinlivan decided he was taking a break to travel as well.

Cavan then are planning for 2020 without one of their most influential players, Dara McVeety and former captain Killian Clarke after they stepped away from Mickey Graham's side.

New Galway football manager Padraic Joyce has to do without midfielder Peter Cooke for the coming season as he relocated to the United States for work reasons.

It was revealed then last week that Odhran MacNiallais will not be returning to the Donegal senior panel for 2020.

The Gaoth Dobhair man played no part for Declan Bonner's team last year having opted out of the squad following his club's run to the All-Ireland semi-final.

It had been expected the 27-year-old would be back for the coming year but Bonner announced last week that he would not be making an immediate return.
