Retired Cork footballer reveals that players have to set up their gym in a warehouse

Retired Cork footballer Patrick Kelly has revealed the worrying extent of limited resources currently afflicting the team.

Kelly told Kieran Shannon of the Irish Examiner that the team have found a base in Fermoy to do their training on the pitch, but have had to resort to making their own gym in a warehouse nearby.

He added that players have to bring in the equipment themselves and paint the interior.

Kelly, who won an All-Ireland with Cork in 2010, said he was disappointed with the current situation.

"You think of the state-of-the-art facilities other counties have developed."

"I know Páirc Uí Chaoimh will be ready this summer and it will be fantastic, but still, it's a main pitch and then an all-weather pitch. Instead you now have a situation where the Cork senior footballers are tucked away in a warehouse in Fermoy."

"You look at Dublin and all the sponsorship partners they’re able to attract. You look at Kerry and the fundraising efforts they’ve done, going abroad, getting people involved. You look at Club Tyrone. The Tipperary Supporters Club. All these external bodies who are supplementing the county effort. In Cork we don’t have that."

Cork faced similar problems last year, often struggling to find a pitch for training sessions. They were stunned by Tipperary in the Munster championship, losing out to the Premier County for the first time in a championship game since 1944.

After briefly recharging during the qualifiers, they were eventually dumped out of the All-Ireland championship by Donegal.
