Report: Gardai and GAA to probe alleged Monaghan Covid rules breach

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has passed on alleged evidence of a Monaghan senior football training gathering to the Gardai and the GAA.

The Irish Independent report that a dossier containing photographic and video material of Monaghan footballers and management training at Corduff GAA club was sent anonymously to the Minister.

It appears that the session in question occurred at the end of March.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice told the newspaper that "Following receipt of an anonymous letter with information regarding this matter, the Department forwarded the information to the GAA, An Garda Síochána, and the Department of Health for their appropriate attention."

The revelation comes a week after a number of high-profile Dublin senior footballers trained at the Innisfails GAA Club in the capital in contravention of Government and GAA guidelines. This led to the Dublin County Board suspending Metropolitans manager Dessie Farrell for a period of 12 weeks.

When contacted by the Irish Independent, Monaghan chairman Declan Flanagan said:

"If it is of a Monaghan training session I’m not aware of it, because we have been holding fast on going back to training, the Monaghan county board have, and as far as I’m concerned Monaghan GAA are not doing any training and I’ll tell you there is very little activity on any pitch in Monaghan.”

This latest development will overshadow the GAA's efforts to detail a master fixtures roadmap for the inter-county and club season.

Inter-county training is currently suspended until April 19th.
