A ninth Leinster title in a row has brought with it as much scrutiny as it has a celebration for the Dublin senior footballers.
The inevitable nature of the game ensured that whether the win was by five points or 15 the discussion was likely to remain centred on funding and the gulf in quality between Dublin and the rest of the field.
How the gap can be plugged is the question, with some calling for a tiered championship and others for Dublin’s revenue to be shared amongst the other counties.
Whatever is done, former Dublin star Mossy Quinn said that while other counties should be looking for more money it can not be without county boards showing due planning.
“It's not as simple as to say just give counties the money or give people the money. There has to be the right people in place to know what to do with the money and there has to be a long term plan as to what to do,” Quinn said on Monday’s OTB AM.
“A lot of it is to do with the skill level of the personnel involved.” Quinn further added that if extra money was to reach other counties they shouldn’t simply spend it on their senior team.
“My own personal opinion is that wasn’t what was done in Dublin or what helped build Dublin GAA. There isn't an endless fund that this money comes in from the game and Jim Gavin then turns around and goes ‘that’s great we have x to spend.’”
Rather funds should be put towards game promotion officers working on the ground with clubs and youth teams, Quinn said.
Quinn also disputed the view that Dublin are self-sufficient and that Dublin GAA money should be distributed to other counties as a result.
“What is the overall aim of the GAA?”, he asked. “I know there are lots of people screaming it's not just to benefit Dublin GAA. I don't think anyone in Dublin is saying: ‘we need this we, need that and we don't care what anybody else gets’. That's not the situation at all.”
“It has to come down to trying to increase the quality of the GAA and the number of people playing GAA across the whole country. It is up to the GAA as the governing body and the leaders on that to put something in place to make sure that is happening.”
