'Putting a line in it' | Anthony Moyles on needing decisive GAA action

Anthony Moyles says he does not expect any GAA action at all this year, with the Covid-19 outbreak already wiping out the summer's action in all codes.

The GAA announced yesterday that there will be no inter-county action whatsoever before October, while they also acknowledge there is no appetite for playing games behind closed doors.

Former Meath star Moyles told Ger and Eoin on OTB AM this morning that there's no indication there will be a return anytime soon, with a more decisive ruling out of action this year by the GAA perhaps a better option.

"The safety of players, the safety of people around the players, be it family members, people within clubs, that's paramount. You can argue both sides of it relative to the economy and everything else but when you're an amateur sportsperson... that is the difference between some of the pressure being applied on other sports and what we have in the GAA.

"The GAA don't want to be potentially exposed to something happening, and someone being able to re-trace that back to a specific game or training or whatever it was.

"It's a very sticky wicket for them, and it's a very sticky wicket for lots and lots of different sectors and businesses obviously.

"From what I can see there are some people who are just looking for clarification and a lack of ambiguity... there has to be give and take in all walks of life at the moment.

"They don't want to come out and be too early about shutting something down and then kind of saying 'Well, if we had waited two months we probably could have got something in.'

"Personally I don't think there's going to be any. I don't think there's going to be anything happening this year. I think it's fanciful to think it will be.

"Maybe they would be better served putting a line in it, and just saying 'No, it's done until next year.' I can't see it happening to be honest.

"It's a tough situation, there's no doubt about it. We're in a hope phase at the moment, we really are. There's a lot of hope out there, I hope that is 100 per cent correct.

"But looking at reality... I really can't see it [a vaccine] happening for a long time if at all."
