Ladies GAA players at all grades must now wear mouthguards when they are playing matches.
The rule was passed at the LGFA (Ladies Gaelic Football Association) congress last year, two years after it was first introduced for players at juvenile and minor level.
Under this new initiative, players will be sent off in a game if they are not wearing a mouthguard and will not be allowed to return until they retrieve one. They also will not be covered under the Injury Fund unless they observe the mouthguard rule.
According to the Ladies Gaelic Football website, players can choose between three types of mouthguard. Stock mouthguards and boil and bite mouthguards are both available for purchase in most sports shops. Players can also get custom-fitted moutguards. These are considered to be most effective as they allow for better protection in case of impact. They also allow for more comfortable breathing and their speech is less restricted.
