Mayo County Board open to midweek games to ease Club Championship congestion

The Connacht Club Championship may end up taking place this year without any Mayo representatives.

Sunday's All-Ireland Final draw means that no Club Championship games will take place in Mayo until the weekend of October 9th at the very earliest. Championship games have previously been postponed ahead of the drawn final, with games scheduled to take place in August being pushed back to after the All-Ireland Final.

The Mayo champions are due to face the Sligo winners in the Connacht Championship on October 30th. The Sligo Final takes place on October 2nd between St. Mary's and Tourlestrane, giving the winners four weeks to prepare for the game.

The issue for the Mayo County Board is that they have four rounds of the Championship to play, but only three Sundays to do so, before the Connacht Championship tie. All 16 teams still have one group game to play, before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Speaking to Newstalk Sport, a representative from the Mayo County Board said that "all options are being considered which includes the possibility of midweek games", to solve the backlog of matches.

They added that; "hopefully the options available to us will become a bit clearer in the coming days".

While Mayo's run to the All-Ireland Final has united the GAA community in the county behind the team, the success of Stephen Rochford's side has been to the detriment of the club players.

The Mayo champions have reached the Connacht Final in each of the four years, with Castlebar Mitchels winning the title in 2013 and 2015. On both occasions, Mitchels reached the All-Ireland Final before losing to St. Vincent's and Ballyboden-St. Enda's respectively.
