Maurice Fitzgerald set for beefed up role with Kerry footballers

Kerry legend Maurice Fitzgerald is to take on additional coaching responsibilities under Peter Keane for the 2021 Championship.

The St Mary's club man is to assume a role with the forwards, as Kerry finalise their backroom staff for the new campaign.

Kerry will not be replacing Donie Buckley directly, following his departure from the set up last year.

It's understood exploratory talks were held with Paul Galvin before Christmas, but these came to nothing.

Fitzgerald is entering his fifth year in the decision-making team, having acted as a selector since Eamon Fitzmaurice brought him into the fold in 2017.

The ex-forward achieved legendary status as a player with the green and gold, scoring nine points in the 1997 All-Ireland final victory over Mayo.

He would go on to win a second All-Ireland winners medal in 2000.

More details on his role are expected in Thursday's Kerry's Eye.
