JJ Delany explains how Cork got the sweeper system wrong against Tipp

Former Kilkenny hurler JJ Delaney feels Cork made some mistakes in the way they implemented their sweeper system in their limp defeat to Tipperary in the Munster championship opener yesterday.

The ex-left wing-back, who was joined by The Sunday Times' Denis Walsh on Off The Ball tonight, picked out some of the key errors in the 0-22 to 0-13 result at Semple Stadium.

"I think they were very worried about Seamus Callanan and they had two lads marking him instead of actually playing their own game. You see the likes of Clare and Waterford play the sweeper. They go back in numbers but attack in numbers as well. I think Cork got back but they never attacked either," he said.

"Another mistake I think that Cork made was they left Padraic Maher free for the first 20-25 minutes. Every loose ball he was on top of and any balls that the Cork was getting was going back its way to Padraic Maher and Padraic Maher was picking out the Tipp forwards better than the Cork backs were picking out the Cork forwards."
