Jim McGuinness assisting Mayo ahead of All-Ireland final - Report

If Mayo are going to overcome Dublin this Sunday and capture a first All-Ireland in 65 years, the'll need an performance for the ages.

Dublin are strongly tipped to win the All-Ireland and a victory for Jim Gavin's men would surely solidify their reputation as one of the game's great teams.

In order to try and solve the Dublin puzzle, it appears Jim McGuinness has been enlisted to help the Mayo cause.

According to RTE co-commentator Martin Carney, McGuinness has been brought in to assist with their defensive set-up.

"You can't play Dublin in toe-to-toe from the word go," Carney old TodayFM's Matt Cooper on The Last Word.

"They will have to have a sweeper system that they brought into place in the Fermanagh game and have added incrementally since then, primarily with Kevin McLoughlin in the role.

"I think they will try that again but they might even have a double sweeper. It is interesting, in their last weekend in Limerick they had Jim McGuinness down speaking to them. Now, Jim McGuinness isn't coming down to talk to them about forward play. It has to be to look at defence."

Guinness orchestrated a famous victory over Dublin 2014 in the All-Ireland semi-final and that result remains Gavin's only defeat as senior manager in the Championship.

Gavin and McGuinness also have history previous to this when the two managers met in the final of the U21 All-Ireland, with Dublin coming out on top over Donegal after Michael Murphy missed a last minute penalty.

UPDATE: Speaking on Saturday's Off The Ball David Brady reported that McGuinness did in fact speak with the Mayo team ahead of Sunday's final.
