Jim Gavin: "Dublin/Meath rivalry is still strong"

Dublin boss Jim Gavin insists that the rivalry between Dublin and Meath remains strong, despite the All-Ireland champions' relatively straightforward victory over the Royals yesterday.

The Dubs got off to a slow start, but a poor second half performance from Meath meant that there was never any doubt the current Leinster champions would compete in their third sixth consecutive Leinster final.

"You need to be satisfied [with the result] from a Dublin man's perspective," he told Newstalk Sport's Oisin Langan after the game, "A 10 point win over Meath any day is a good day in the office.

"We have great respect for them, the way they play their football and that rivalry is still strong. Overall, the performance was good, maybe a bit patchy at times.

"In the first quarter we created a lot of scoring opportunities and didn't execute them. So that gives us something to work on."

Dublin now face Westmeath in the Leinster final for consecutive years and Gavin expects to face similar challenges with regards to how the team organise themselves defensively.

"Meath set up how we thought they would from the main with 13 men behind the ball. Most teams have [set up this way], we experienced it in the national league. We've become accustomed to playing against it and every team has the right to set up the way they see fit.

"When you play against a mass defence like that you need to be patient and to probe to see where there are areas to [exploit]."

You can listen to analysis on this game and more on this week's Monday Rewind podcast with Oisin Langan.
