In a shock announcement, Jim Gavin has stepped down as manager of the Dublin footballers with immediate effect.Ā
Speculation had been rife that Gavin would step down after winning a fifth All-Ireland title in a row in September but was believed to be staying on having not made an announcement by this month.
As the columnists begin their eulogies of the six time All-Ireland winner, Twitter has been reacting with a mixture of shock and memes.
5 in a row, what a way to bow out. He finished what Gilroy started in some style. Attention to detail was unreal Iād say, summed up this year. Down a point in added time this year, down a man= keeper to full back full back pushes out to pick up spare man = turnovers. šš» Jim Gavin

Jim Gavin gone. Wow! Can't believe the timing. Not much time to appoint a successor.

The 2020 football season just got a touch more interesting šµ
Jim Gavin steps aside as Dublin manager, an unbelievable legacy - defined a generation of the greatest.
5 in-a-row & 7 All-Irelands in total. (incl. Dubs 2nd ever u21 in 2010) and not including 1995 as a player. #GAA pic.twitter.com/9wqPcSMJLcā Tommy Rooney (@TomasORuanaidh) November 30, 2019
Jim Gavin always reminded me of this meme. Whether it was cruising to a Leinster Championship win, or whether Donegal or Mayo or Kerry were causing fires, it was almost always going to be fine. pic.twitter.com/Artlzt2UO3

Jim Gavin revolutionised Dublin GAA, what an incredible coach and what a shocker too, genuinely thought he had a few more years left in him, whoever takes over is lucky to be inheriting such an incredible team. He's certainly laid down the groundwork for his incoming successor.
