"The Army was wonderful for me" - Jim Gavin shares thoughts on Fennelly comments

Although he had not been made aware of the controversy, Dublin's Jim Gavin admitted that he does not share Colin Fennelly's sentiments regarding his own spell working within the Irish Armed Forces.

Speaking to Off the Ball after guiding Dublin to a National League defeat of Galway this evening, Gavin, who spent his career in the Irish Air Corps, reflected on a far more rewarding experience.

"It was a great career choice by me," Gavin stated.

"I'm still very fond of my times [when] I reflect back on when I served proudly with the state in the uniform for twenty years.

"They really looked after me, trained me really well and I've just got fond memories, great friends for life and great experiences.

"It's been wonderful for me, so that's all I can say on that."

On a night where Dublin recorded a 1-15 to 0-07 win against Kevin Walsh's Galway, Gavin asserted that the All-Ireland champions were only really getting started in 2019.

"We do take each game in isolation," Gavin noted in light of last weekend's defeat to Monaghan.

"It's the National Football League and we think it's a great competition, but, we're only back three-weeks today actually.

"We've a lot of work to do and in some ways, and I'm not being disrespectful, [the National League] is part of our work getting into the season, pre-season you could call it."

Confirming that he believed his Dublin side had done quite well in the defeat to Monaghan, a combination of fatigue and "class" from Malachy O'Rourke's side resulted in a successive defeat to the Ulster county.
