'How can they be refereed?' - Mayo's James Horan critical of "crazy" new rules

Echoing concerns shared by a number of his contemporaries, Mayo manager James Horan is uncertain how the "crazy" new rules proposed for Gaelic football can possibly be enforced in a match scenario.

Speaking ahead of Mayo's opening FBD League clash against Leitrim on Sunday, Horan admitted that he isn't in favour of the new rules, and, believes that they will prove too difficult for a single referee to suitably apply.

Horan, who has recently returned to inter-county management with his native county after the departure of Stephen Rochford, confirmed that he and his staff will do all they can to "make sure the players understand" the proposed changes, nevertheless.

"Let’s see how they are. Look, I wouldn’t be a fan of them. I think they’re a little bit crazy to be honest," Horan explained on Mayo GAA TV. 

"I don’t know what we’re trying to do to referees. How they’re going to be refereed I just don’t know. You’ve seen it in quite a lot of games already where they’ve been used.

"I’m not sure what’s going to be brought in for the National League so we’ll just have to wait and see. We have to play with what’s there.

"We’ve done a little bit of work on it and we’ll make sure the players understand it. We’ll play whatever’s happening."

It had initially appeared that the rules would be brought in on a trial basis for this year's National League.

However, emerging in a joint-statement on behalf of both the GAA and GPA in late November, it was confirmed that the proposed rules would first come into practice during this year's pre-season provincial games; with a subsequent review to take place that will ultimately determine whether a further trial is set to take place during the National League.

Determined to deal with whatever conclusion is reached in terms of playing rules, James Horan, it appears, would as quickly leave things well alone.
