While Kerry legend Maurice Fitzgerald was beaten by Colm Cooper in Off The Ball's World Cup of Dublin Kerry All-Stars, Kieran Donaghy told the brilliant story about facing Fitzgerald in a league game. 

Speaking on Friday's OTB AM, Donaghy remembered trying to make a big impression on him.

"To show you how much of a dope I was when I was young, we were playing them in a county league game in Connolly Park in front of my own people.

"I couldn't actually wait to get my hands on Maurice Fitzgerald in the middle of the field.

"I said I was going to absolutely break him up, as in I am going to be in his ear because obviously I can't go out and play football with him," he said.

Donaghy said he had his eye on Fitzgerald the whole game and he wanted to let him know that he was there.

Mercurial character 

"I hit a point with my left foot and it went over the black spot and I did my usual an made a bee-line for Maurice Fitz. I let him know like that it was a great point.

"The resulting kick out I felt a knee up on my shoulder and I hit the ground. I looked away and saw Fitz was scampering down the field," the former Kerry footballer said.

Fitzgerald is known for being a mercurial character and it was on full show during the game when he made a fool of Donaghy.

"I got up and chased him back and he got a hand pass off and he got it back. He was on the 45, on the right-hand side of the field and he looked at the post and dummy soloed.

"I dived to get a big block to follow up my great score and he dummy soloed it and threw it on to the left foot from the 45 and split the posts.

"Then he just gave me a wink as he jogged past, that was the end of me talking to Maurice Fitzgerald," Donaghy said.
