Galway's Frank Burke confirms his candidacy to become the new GAA President

Former Connacht Council President Frank Burke has confirmed he is in the running to become the new President of the GAA.

Burke released a statement on Wednesday, through the Galway County Board, confirming his candidacy ahead of next spring's election.

"Having served as Secretary of CLG Ardrahan, Frank Burke was elected as Secretary of Coiste Iomána na nÓg and Féile na nGael before taking up the position of Secretary and then Chairman of the Galway County Board. At Provincial level, Frank was elected President of Connacht Council (2012-2015) during which time he represented Connacht on the GAA National Management Committee."

He becomes the third man to enter the race, following Kerry's Sean Walsh and Longford's Martin Skelly. The election will take place in Croke Park in February 2017.

Cavan's Aogan O'Fearghail will remain in his position until February 2018, with the winner of the election taking charge at the 2018 Congress.

Burke has worked with numerous GAA groups at national level. He currently holds the office of Chairman of the National Coaching and Games Development Committee and previously was Chairman of the National Referee’s Committee, Chairman of the Central Review Committee, a Member of the National Finance Committee and Chairman of the Hurling Development Committee.

Former All-Ireland winner Joe McDonagh was the last Galway native to hold the Presidency. He was in charge from 1997 to 1999.
